In Hutchinson, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests. If you require such a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is accessible nationwide, with centers in every city ready to conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches typically suffices, whether from the scalp or body. Test results can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more frequent method in drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over the standard urine analyses. These tests are favored by organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation. The notable advantage is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that makes tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting recent use within five days, urinalysis remains the most reliable test.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a standard pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is ideal. A jeweler’s scale should be used for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken instead. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. All other types, such as facial and axillary hair, are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the introductory handling of a specimen within a lab’s system. This step consists of ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any requisite data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug usage for most specimens and is cost-effective, a positive result mandates further validation for legal acceptability. Any samples yielding a presumed positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at markedly lower concentrations than in alternative approaches, such as urine or oral fluids, making hair testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. As required, presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to three months, while urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Cheating resistance: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to manipulation, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about five to seven days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair tests typically incur more expense compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Follicle vs. Urine Testing in Hutchinson, NJ reveals how hair testing outperforms more conventional urine analyses. Advantages include a longer detection window and higher accuracy, making hair tests a superior choice for monitoring substance use, thus providing more dependable results over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
