Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ironia, New Jersey. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with facilities across all major cities Nationwide, capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal institutions, and probation services. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection capability, reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and is virtually cheat-proof. Despite this, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests still provide the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption, hair testing offers extensive insights into drug and alcohol history by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair during growth. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage up to roughly a three-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, obtaining 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test sample is categorized into four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning establishes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This procedure checks that the sample has been correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical means of eliminating drug use in most samples, court-admissible results need a follow-up confirmation. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening demand an additional confirmation.

Upon indicating presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, more hair is selected from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screenings are deemed the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each sample with a presumptive positive result is meticulously washed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests detect drug intake for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a more limited detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are exceedingly hard to evade, resulting in more precise findings.
  • Supplies historical usage data: This test can reveal a usage trend over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
