Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Jobstown, New Jersey. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, we specialize in hair testing and maintain testing facilities across all cities nationwide for conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more common in recent years for drug assessments. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers that enforce strict drug use policies, legal bodies, and those on probation frequently use these tests. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection window, usually lasting up to 90 days. Tests are conducted in an observed setting, making them nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain more accurate for drug use detected within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective measure for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a historical record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair can reflect up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, moderately tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg, the perfect sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equal quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing additional data logging not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is an economical solution to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid legally. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at a much lower concentration level compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo a cleansing process prior to confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides longitudinal data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair shaft, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine tests in Jobstown, NJ due to its extensive detection capabilities and robustness. While standard urine tests detect recent drug use, hair follicle tests extend the window to numerous drug categories over a more extended period.
Hair testing showcases superior detection accuracy and reliability, ensuring organizations and individuals receive comprehensive insights into substance use.

Employers with zero-tolerance policies benefit from hair testing's thoroughness, offering greater peace of mind compared to traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Jobstown, NJ, hair follicle testing offers a much broader detection timeline, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This is invaluable for employers needing detailed insight into an employee's past substance use.
A broad detection window ensures that any long-term usage patterns become evident, allowing for more informed decisions.

The flexibility in detection intervals makes hair follicle testing a trustworthy option for understanding comprehensive substance histories, which is not possible with shorter-term urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing stands out in Jobstown, NJ, for its resistance to sample tampering, offering reliable and indisputable results. Unlike other tests, it's significantly harder to adulterate or tamper with the samples, ensuring the authenticity of findings.
With stringent collection processes, hair testing guarantees that results remain valid and intact, providing peace of mind to those relying on accurate data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
