Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lake Pine, NJ. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our network spans nationwide, making tests easily accessible in any city. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly integrated hair follicle tests. Various employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists endorse hair tests over conventional urine exams. Hair follicle tests cater to zero-tolerance workplaces, judiciary requirements, and probation cases. A key advantage is the protracted detection span of up to 90 days, minimizing test tampering chances, although urine tests dominate recent usage detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a detailed timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When hair is collected near to the scalp, it can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for a duration of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, extensions, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should there be a lack of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" solely refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other hair kinds (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially processing a specimen into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entries not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening serves as an initial check for the presence of addictive substances. Though it is an economical method to discard drug use for most samples, any positive results necessitate confirmation for legal validation. Samples that are preliminarily positive during Screening require additional verification.

If a preliminary positive is noted during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or saliva tests), highlighting why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all preliminary positive samples undergo washing as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves highly challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: This testing provides a consumption pattern over an extended period, rather than just recent use data.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Substances take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Lake Pine, NJ, excel over traditional urine screenings through superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are often susceptible to tampering, hair testing resists such risks, offering more definitive insights. This enhances trustworthiness, especially for employers committed to maintaining a drug-free workspace.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Lake Pine, NJ, benefit from hair follicle testing's extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive view helps employers better assess historical substance usage patterns among employees or candidates, providing peace of mind when making hiring or retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests is a major advantage in Lake Pine, NJ, ensuring samples remain secure from adulteration. By collecting samples directly from the individual in a controlled process, the authenticity of results is preserved, delivering reliable outcomes that can be confidently acted upon.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
