Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake Telemark, New Jersey. When you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests are versatile for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

Over recent years, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly favored hair follicle testing. A significant number of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now mandate a hair drug test over the conventional urine test. Employers with no-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary contexts prioritize hair follicle tests. Their key advantage is a much longer detection time for drug use—up to 90 days—conducted in a monitored setting, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the leading option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, making it the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process checks if the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might lack.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening provides an economical means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs subsequent confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle embedded within the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lake Telemark, NJ, hair follicle testing is superior to traditional urine tests due to its extended detection period and accuracy. Hair tests are less prone to manipulation and offer a reliable detection method over standard methods.

The reliability of hair testing provides a longer detection window, capturing usage history effectively compared to urine tests, which have a shorter detection threshold.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Lake Telemark, NJ, offers a significant advantage with its extended detection window. This approach can track substance use over a 90-day period, providing employers with a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history.

The ability to review a history of up to three months makes hair testing valuable for employers interested in understanding long-term substance use patterns rather than relying on a short-term snapshot.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Lake Telemark, NJ, hair follicle tests offer a testing method highly resistant to tampering, significantly reducing the possibility of sample adulteration. This method provides unquestionable results.

The nature of hair testing as a tamper-resistant method ensures that it delivers reliable outcomes, safeguarding against sample manipulation, a common issue with other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
