Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lambertville, New Jersey. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, we excel in hair tests and offer test centers in every city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be utilized. Hair analysis can include screening for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has leaned more towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often require hair testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judicial system, and those on probation. Hair tests are preferable because they detect drug use for up to 90 days, observed during collection, and are nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a three-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment consisting of about 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) close to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the preferred specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be permissible in court. Any samples that are potentially positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction preparation. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples are cleansed prior to needed confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands as the preferred choice over urine tests in Lambertville, NJ due to its superior detection stability and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
