Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lamington, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities located in every city across the nation that can administer a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests are capable of analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, conducting drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers adhering to no-drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. The chief advantage of such tests is the extended detection window, which typically spans up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, and nearly impossible to manipulate. Nevertheless, in detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and the process of shipping is uncomplicated.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 strands (akin in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For tests that include EtG, additional parameters, or exceed 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In cases where scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial inclusion of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial assessment to quickly identify drugs of abuse. It is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug use in most samples; however, any positive findings from Screening require confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. This phase involves separating drugs from the hair at a much lower concentration than other strategies (such as urine or oral fluid tests), making hair drug screening the most rigorous method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo a washing step before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes extensive review conforming to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection time of urine tests.
  • Challenging to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can illustrate a usage pattern over time, unlike tests that only show recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent detection: Around 5-7 days are required before drugs become measurable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
