Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Leesburg, New Jersey. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialty in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available across the country capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair length is required from the crown or body. Our hair tests can identify drug and alcohol/ETG use or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests has gained momentum in drug testing procedures. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over urine analyses. Hair tests are preferred by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers. These tests are favored for their extended detection time of up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are nearly infallible. However, for detecting use within a short window of 5 days, urine tests hold greater accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an efficient measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of drug usage by trapping biomarkers in the strand’s fibers during growth. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a span of up to three months. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

An optimal hair sample for screening and confirmation involves a 1.5-inch segment with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding around 100mg. For EtG add-ons or testing exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. References to head hair solely pertain to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This process entails ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective methodology to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for court acceptance. Samples that appear positive in Screening mandate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show potential positive results in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug screening as a complex methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspect positive samples are washed before Confirmation if required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can illustrate patterns of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth discrepancies can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
