Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Leisure Village West, NJ. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, they specialize in this area, with centers available across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair testing can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to specific needs.

Over the years, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer these tests to standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation monitoring due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and difficulty to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the more accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. Collected from near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the inception of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any manual data entry absent in an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a more complex procedure.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used for the Confirmation of any positive results from screening. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with the standards of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timespan.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Reveals usage history: It supplies a pattern of drug consumption spanning over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences might affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
