In Leisuretowne, NJ, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing and maintains testing centers in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body may be used. Options for testing include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair tests.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are suitable for employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, or individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their longer detection period of up to 90 days and collection under supervision, making them hard to cheat. However, urine tests remain the best for drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term usage markers by embedding biomarkers within its fiber strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers up to an estimated 3-month window for identifying alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for evaluation and verification. For elevated tests like EtG, additional assessments, or panels exceeding 10, a collection of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory examination of a drug test result involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This phase entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug usage among most samples, a screen indicating positive requires verification for judicial acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

In instances where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. This stage isolates drugs from hair at notably reduced concentrations than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which feature a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can illustrate a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not solely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Individuals require 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the levels of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
