Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lenola, New Jersey. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is required, our expertise lies in hair testing. With testing centers available in cities nationwide, we can conduct your hair test expertly. You typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. Hair analysis can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. Various entities, like employers and courts, are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation prefer hair follicle tests. The main advantage is the extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, making it nearly tamper-proof, whereas urine tests are more precise for recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to have 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing phase of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and mailed, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation for court acceptance. Those samples that test presumably positive in Screening mandate a secondary verification.

In instances where a sample tests presumably positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set aside for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at notably reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive results from screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Preemptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a reduced detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Chronological information: It offers insights into the pattern of drug usage over time, rather than current usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent activity: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
