In Locust, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, our specialists are equipped with the expertise for hair testing. We operate testing centers across all cities nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, whether from the head crown or body, for analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has increased in drug testing methods. It's favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, along with courts and probationary individuals, frequently rely on hair tests. The main advantage is an extended detection window for drug use, which can span up to 90 days. These tests involve supervised collection, making them difficult to tamper with. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures biomarkers in its strands as it grows, offering an extended history of substance usage. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It’s easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A strand sample of 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG additions or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It’s recommended to weigh the sample using a scale designed for jewelry. If scalp hair isn’t present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair are about scalp hair specifically. Body hair covers all other types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process consists of four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially logged into the laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any missing information that wasn't captured by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective in excluding drug use among most samples, any positive results from Screening need confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples with suspected positive results in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is suspected positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are obtained from hair at concentrations lower than alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

Confirmation is carried out on any positive screening findings using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with tentative positive results are cleansed as necessary. The entire testing process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, undergoes review both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that feature a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering hair drug test outcomes is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Records historical use: Hair testing presents a pattern of drug use covering an extended timeline, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair only after around 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs greater costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often known as "hair follicle tests," these tests actually examine the hair strand itself, and not the scalp’s hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Locust, NJ, vastly outshines traditional urine tests, offering superior detection reliability. This method's accuracy in identifying illicit substances outperforms urine counterparts, providing a robust option for employers aiming for foolproof drug monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
