Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Matawan, New Jersey. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty in hair testing ensures access to testing centers across all cities Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair depth is required, either from the crown of your head or other body parts. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as needed.

The adoption of hair follicle drug tests has increased considerably in recent years. This method is now often preferred over standard urine tests by employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts. Hair follicle testing is crucial for organizations with zero-tolerance policies and for court-ordered testing. The extended detection window, which is usually up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, makes hair follicle tests nearly impossible to cheat. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For testing such as EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's advisable to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of preparing a sample for entry into a laboratory system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that wasn't captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for drug abuse. Although screening offers a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to confirm any positive screening results. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs greater expenses compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Matawan, NJ, hair follicle testing is an advantageous alternative to traditional urine tests. Not only does it provide a longer detection window, but its accuracy is unrivaled. Hair tests capture a comprehensive history of substance use, offering more detailed insights compared to urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
