Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Millington, NJ, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to solution. If you require a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in this field, with centers nationwide capable of performing the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the scalp or body for analysis. Options include testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored choices.

The prevalence of using hair follicle tests for drugs has increased over the years. Many organizations such as employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor hair over urine tests. Employers with no-drug policies, courts, and people on probation often utilize hair tests. This method's major advantage is its extended detection timeline, lasting up to 90 days, involving monitored collection, making it highly secure. Yet, for recent usage within 5 days, urine testing remains unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as a robust approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a long-term history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to collect, difficult to adulterate, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the perfect quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes verifying the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Presumptively positive Screening samples require further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening results is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when required. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Patterns over time: Provides insights into a timeline of drug usage, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
