Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Newport, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialization lies in hair testing with facilities available in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or body, can be used in most scenarios. This method enables detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized tests.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has grown significantly. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine ones. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary programs often choose this testing method. The major advantage is the extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, alongside an observed collection method that minimizes cheating, although urine tests remain more reliable for recent usage detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains an extended history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When acquired close to the scalp, hair can provide up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It is advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When specifying head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is processed into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a quick preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration in comparison to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to conduct.

For confirming any positive screening outcome, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally bear a higher cost than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Newport, NJ, hair follicle tests are rapidly becoming the preferred choice over traditional urine tests. This is largely due to their superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a longer detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days prior. This makes them ideal for environments with strict zero-tolerance policies.

Additionally, hair follicle testing is much harder to cheat compared to urine tests, ensuring the integrity of the results. While urine tests may only reflect recent drug use, hair tests offer a comprehensive overview of a person's substance history. This is invaluable for employers and legal systems aiming for thorough, reliable testing processes.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window

A standout advantage of hair follicle drug testing in Newport, NJ, is its extended detection window, monitoring substance use up to 90 days. This long period allows for a comprehensive view of an individual's drug history, making it a preferred choice for employers who need to assess the long-term habits of applicants or staff.

Unlike urine tests which only focus on recent consumption, hair testing provides a broader timeline, enhancing the accuracy of drug use assessments. This extended window can significantly impact hiring and supervisory decisions, reinforcing the workplace's commitment to a drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Newport, NJ, one of the key benefits of hair follicle drug testing is its resistance to tampering. The collection process and the nature of hair testing render it nearly impossible to adulterate the samples, providing unquestionable and consistent results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
