Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Haledon, New Jersey. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers in all major cities across the nation that can facilitate it. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally required, with body hair as an alternative. Hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

In the last few years, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a method for drug testing. Increasingly, employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for a hair drug test over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judiciary systems, and individuals on probation. Its key advantage lies in a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, observed during collection, rendering it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for detecting very recent usage within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair shaft. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's database. This stage includes ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for the presence of drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screening must be corroborated to be legally tenable. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening need a further confirmation test.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleansed before verification as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which exhibit a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can demonstrate a long-term pattern of drug use, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
