In North Wildwood, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing offers a full range of hair follicle drug testing solutions. For those in need of alcohol or drug tests via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is the go-to expert. With centers in every city nationwide, locating a testing center is effortless. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Options for testing cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has surged. Employers, courts, and professionals dealing with substance misuse now often opt for hair tests instead of standard urine ones. Designed for zero-tolerance drug policies, hair tests are invaluable for employers, courts, and probation programs. Their key advantage is a broader drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process, making them almost tamper-free. Yet, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests maintain superior reliability.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a detailed record of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can indicate substance use back as far as about three months. Hair is easy to gather, relatively immune to tampering, and straightforward to send for analysis.

A sample comprising 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, an ideal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is optimal. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair can be taken. Reference to head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug tests encompasses four primary phases, namely Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of incorporating a sample into a laboratory's system. This step entails ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input if not pre-entered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for controlled substances. Although Screening effectively eliminates drug use in most cases at a low cost, any positive indications require verification for legal proceedings. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate confirmatory analysis.

When a sample is preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original batch for further preparation in Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening findings undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS, with all preliminary positive samples undergoing cleansing as needed before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Tamper-resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Captures usage trends: It offers insights into patterns of drug consumption over time, beyond recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally comes at a higher cost than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these actually analyze the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
