In Ocean Acres, NJ, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our network spans nationwide with facilities equipped for reliable tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed. Explore options like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personalized screening.

Hair follicle tests have increasingly become the preferred method for drug screenings. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts gravitate towards hair tests over traditional urine tests. These screenings align with zero-tolerance workplace policies and probation conditions. With up to a 90-day detection capability, hair tests provide meticulous tracking of drug intake, circumventing chances of deceit. However, for recent usage detection (within 5 days), urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains evidence of substance use over an extended period by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and other substances for up to around 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economical in ruling out drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the original sample for Extraction. This stage involves drug extraction from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Not easily manipulated: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical data provision: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, instead of merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing emerges as a superior choice over traditional urine tests in Ocean Acres, NJ. The key advantage lies in its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. This method provides a longer window for detecting substance use and is nearly resistant to tampering, making urine tests seem less effective by comparison.

For organizations with zero-tolerance policies, the robust detection capabilities of hair testing ensure compliance, as it uncovers drug use histories far longer than urine tests, offering enhanced peace of mind.

Extended Detection Window

One of the defining features of hair follicle testing in Ocean Acres, NJ is its extensive detection window. Covering up to 90 days of substance history, these tests offer employers a panoramic view of a potential or current employee's past drug use, thereby aiding informed hiring and retention decisions.

Employers seeking to establish drug-free environments benefit from the prolonged detection capabilities of hair tests, which present a comprehensive substance use profile, unlike shorter-duration urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug tests in Ocean Acres, NJ, offer a tamper-resistant alternative to traditional drug testing methods. The structure of hair testing substantially mitigates the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring authenticity and trustworthiness of results.

This testing method is virtually unassailable, as the collection process is observed, making it nearly impossible to alter samples without detection, thus securing reliable and indisputable outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
