In Park Ridge, New Jersey, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is provided by Accredited Drug Testing. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, we specialize in hair testing, offering services nationwide, including local centers. Typically, hair measurements of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be used. These tests are versatile, detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offering other custom hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more commonplace in recent years. It’s a preferred method for many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over the traditional urine test. These tests are crucial for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation. A primary advantage is the extensive drug detection window of up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a valuable asset for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When taken from the area near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use history spanning up to approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial inclusion of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This process includes verifying that the sample was securely sealed and properly shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing supplemental data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a rapid preliminary test for drug abuse. Despite being a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in the bulk of samples, positive screens require confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive samples during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening outcomes undergo confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Reduced chance of deception: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical data: They offer an overview of drug usage patterns over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drug traces in hair become detectable approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," these tests assess the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine testing for multiple reasons in Park Ridge, NJ. Longer detection window: Up to 90 days vs. a few days for urine. Higher accuracy: Reduces false negatives and positives, crucial for drug-free workplace compliance.

Reliability: Hair tests are less prone to tampering, providing a true reflection of substance use history, essential for employers and legal bodies.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Park Ridge, NJ, value the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing. Unlike urine tests, hair samples can trace drug use up to 90 days back, providing a comprehensive timeline of substance usage history.

This longer detection period is invaluable for understanding an individual's substance behavior over time, informing hiring and monitoring decisions within professional settings.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Park Ridge, NJ, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant method, minimizing sample adulteration risks. This reliability provides unquestionable results critical for maintaining integrity in drug testing.

Security: The testing process involves collecting hair in a manner that's hard to manipulate or alter, thereby enhancing trust in the outcomes for employers and legal authorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
