In the bustling community of Penns Grove, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing stands ready to offer comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. Whether you require an assessment for narcotics or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing allows us to service nationwide with centers capable of conducting these tests. A standard requirement is having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, though body hair can be utilized. These tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol (ETG), and other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, the shift towards hair follicle drug tests for drug screenings has been notable. Employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly prefer hair over the conventional urine tests. This method is favored by entities enforcing strict no-drug policies and for individuals on probation. Key advantages include a robust detection duration of up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, not easily altered, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is advised. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. Regarding head hair, this refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that are presumed positive in Screening require a further verification.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, and not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Consistent results: Elements like hair color and unique differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
