Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pitman, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty at Accredited Drug Testing is hair testing, with facilities available for this test in cities across the nation. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required for testing on the crown or, less commonly, from the body. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing needs.

Recently, the method of drug testing increasingly includes hair follicle drug examinations. A growing number of employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by zero-tolerance drug use policy employers, the courts, and individuals under probation. The significant advantage of using hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection window for drug usage—up to 90 days—aided by a monitored collection process, making it nearly impossible to deceive. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and it ships easily.

A sample of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) measuring 1.5 inches near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to all other hair classifications (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory testing process for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method of excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court recognition. Samples that test as presumptive positives in Screening need a confirmatory follow-up.

Should a sample test as a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than seen with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair typically after 5-7 days.
  • Pricing: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pitman, NJ, the superiority of hair follicle testing over urine testing is clear. Hair tests boast a detection accuracy that surpasses typical urine tests. They cover a more extended period, providing a comprehensive view of substance use, which is especially beneficial for employers needing reliable results.

Comparing the benefits, hair follicle tests prove more resistant to manipulation, unlike urine tests. This reliability ensures employers and authorities can trust the findings, which is invaluable in maintaining strict zero-tolerance environments where unequivocal evidence is critical.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
