Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Plainsboro, New Jersey. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in hair testing and have facilities across various cities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required to carry out these tests, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methodologies. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine assays. Hair follicle drug tests are essential for employers enforcing strict drug-use policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. Their key advantage includes extending the detection window for drug use to as long as 90 days, ensuring the process is monitored closely and minimizing chances of manipulation. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, presenting a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample comprising 1.5 inches of roughly 200 strands of hair, equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil, taken nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for handling a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is entered into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most specimens, a positive Screening result requires confirmation to be considered valid in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation step.

Should a specimen be deemed presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations significantly less than those used in other methods like urine or oral fluid testing, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized within the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and also aligned with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are effective for up to 90 days, offering a longer detection span than urine tests.
  • Cheating deterrent: It's extremely challenging to evade a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: This test presents a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally takes approximately 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
