Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair analysis and operate testing centers across the nation that administer hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. Hair tests can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Many companies, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are particularly favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services. The significant advantage of a hair test is its extended detection period, generally spanning up to 90 days, conducted with observed collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for long-term markers of substances like alcohol and drugs, by embedding these indicators within the growing hair fiber. A sample taken near the scalp can reflect a detection span of up to three months for various substances. Hair sampling is straightforward, complex to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) gathered close to the scalp delivers 100mg of sample, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For tests pertaining to EtG, additional screenings, or broader tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jewelry scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a corresponding quantity of body hair suffices. When mentioning head hair, we denote scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome involves four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is incorporated into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not supplied digitally.

Screening functions as an initial, swift assessment for illicit substances. While it effectively precludes substance use in most cases, a positive finding in Screening must be verified to be permissible in legal contexts. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

When Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and processed for Extraction. This step involves extracting substances from hair at diminished concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid). Hence, hair drug analysis stands as the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of positive screenings occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as necessary. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug use dating back up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test presents significant challenges, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reflects usage patterns: It offers an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
