Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ralston, NJ. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is available nationwide, including a center near you. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction over conventional methods. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse counselors often prefer hair drug tests instead of the regular urine analyses. Companies with no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation favor these tests for their extensive detection span, generally up to 90 days, reliable collection methods, and resistance to tampering, although urine tests remain best for very recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month timeframe for the detection of alcohol and other drugs. Hair is effortless to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for examination and substantiation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair might be acquired. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair solely. "Body hair" includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the lab procedure of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s framework. This encompasses confirming the sample was sealed and sent accurately, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not incorporated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screening must be authenticated to be acceptable in court. All samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a Screening result be preliminarily positive, further hair is drawn from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. During this process, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is renowned as the most arduous method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is particularly difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a chronological pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal disparities in hair development can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
