Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in River Vale, NJ. For those seeking hair drug or alcohol exams, we excel in hair evaluations, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body are needed. Our analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

The prevalence of hair follicle testing has risen, often replacing traditional urine methods. Employers, legal systems, and substance professionals prefer hair exams due to strict no-drug policies. These tests extend their drug detection period up to 90 days, ensuring rigorous observation and minimizing deceit. Urine tests still lead in the accuracy of recent 5-day usage checks.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy history of substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair grants a detection time frame of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (matching the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp offers 100mg of hair, forming the optimal sample for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, it is best to use 150mg of the sample. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a specimen into a lab’s system; it involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for abused drugs. While Screening provides a cost-effective strategy for negating drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. All samples flagged as presumptively positive through Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is flagged presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than seen with alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is pursued through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo necessary washing. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use stretching back 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, which enhances accuracy.
  • Historical insights: The test can trace a pattern of usage across a timeframe, not solely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand rather than the hair follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out beyond traditional urine tests in River Vale, NJ due to its higher efficacy in capturing drug traces. Unlike urine tests, which provide limited detection periods, hair tests excel in offering a much longer observational window, ensuring better trust and decision-making in employment and legal contexts.

Extended Detection Window

The prolonged detection capacity of hair follicle testing, spanning up to 90 days, allows employers in River Vale, NJ to better evaluate an applicant’s or employee’s substance use history. This period provides a comprehensive insight into an individual's behavior, aiding in informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In River Vale, NJ, the hair follicle testing’s design greatly mitigates the risk of sample tampering. Unlike other methods, the sample's integrity remains intact, ensuring that analysis results are unquestionable and trustworthy, reinforcing employer confidence in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
