Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Riverside Park, New Jersey. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert with testing centers available in every city across the nation. Typically, hair tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head, though body hair might be an option in some cases. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in drug testing procedures. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are particularly popular with employers imposing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and probationary supervision. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection period for drug use, typically stretching back 90 days, and they are collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use in the past few days, urine tests continue to be the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a growing strand. When taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples are easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additions, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg is advised. It’s best to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equal portion of body hair can be used. By head hair, we solely mean scalp hair. Body hair designates all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory process for processing drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system, including checking that it's properly sealed and shipped, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional required data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as a preliminary quick test for substance abuse. Despite being an economical approach to dismiss most drug usage cases, a positive screening result requires verification to stand in court. All samples that test presumptive positive in Screening undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 compliance.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair test is very challenging, making outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It captures a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Downsides:

  • Can't identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair testing generally costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", this examination assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
