Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive solution for hair follicle drug testing in Roseland, NJ. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our company is proficient in hair testing, with centers situated across the nation that can administer such tests. Generally, one should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body available for sampling. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for detecting drug use. This method is now favored by numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals over the conventional urine test. Hair tests are often employed by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probation officers. The advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, with sample collection typically being supervised, making tampering improbable. However, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. It captures biomarkers within the fibers of hair strands, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of about 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of material, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, additional panels above 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advised. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. In terms of head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves these four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab system. This process includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary drug check. Although efficient for excluding drug use across most samples cost-effectively, any positive findings must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples presumptively positive in Screening need a second confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result in Screening, further hair from the original specimen is utilized for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to urine or oral fluids, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter duration.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Shows usage history: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not only capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
