Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saddle Brook, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this field with locations in cities all over the nation ready to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is typically required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method of screening for drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly mandating hair drug tests in place of the conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probation cases often utilize these tests. The main advantage is the extended detection period of drug use, reaching up to 90 days, with observed collections that are very hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch cutting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. When referencing head hair, it exclusively means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in a lab's drug testing procedure include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s database. This process entails verifying that the sample was adequately sealed and delivered, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be accepted in legal settings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most demanding methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is evaluated in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical usage insight: It can show a drug use pattern over time, and not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variability in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
