Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. For hair drug or alcohol testing needs, our specialty in hair testing is backed by a network of testing locations across the country, ready to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair testing accommodates analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

The shift toward using hair follicle drug tests for screenings has grown recently. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals lean toward these tests over urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation supervision owing to their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, rigorous sample collection process, and the low possibility of test manipulation. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair secures a lasting record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. A sample taken near the scalp can offer a detection span of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, it's relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. In instances where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair might be collected. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair is inclusive of all different hair types (face, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal four phases in a laboratory's drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to a sample's initial incorporation into a lab's system, involving confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and executing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary swift assessment for drug use. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to invalidate drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening do demand additional confirmation.

Upon finding a sample presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening being the most challenging technique to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review adhering to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a pattern of drug use over time, not merely immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Scotch Plains, NJ, the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are evident, with hair tests providing superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests have a longer detection window, recording substance use up to 90 days, which urine tests cannot achieve.

Employers benefit from hair tests' ability to reduce the risks of tampering or sample substitution, thereby offering a more reliable assessment.

While urine tests are more effective for recent use, hair testing is unparalleled for reviewing longer-term drug use, offering comprehensive insight into an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

With a detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Scotch Plains, NJ offers a more extensive view of a person's substance use history than other methods. This long detection period is particularly beneficial to employers.

By analyzing drug use over a significant span, hair testing equips companies with insights into applicants' and employees' habits, ensuring informed decisions that contribute to a safer workplace environment.

The comprehensive review of substance use patterns strengthens employers' ability to maintain a drug-free environment and provides applicants a clear background evaluation.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Scotch Plains, NJ is significantly tamper-resistant, reducing the risk of adulteration and ensuring the reliability of results. The hair sample collection process is structured to minimize interference or tampering compared to more simple methods, like urine tests.

Employers benefit from the high level of trust in results, as hair tests offer an authentic view of an individual's substance use without the common issues faced in urine testing.

This integrity is especially valued in legal situations and workplaces where drug-free commitments are crucial for safety and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
