Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our centers, available nationwide, specialize in hair testing. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Different analytes, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, can be detected with hair testing options.

Recently, the preference for drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle testing over urine tests. Organizations such as employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often choose hair drug tests, especially for zero-tolerance policies, legal, or probation purposes. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with being nearly tamper-proof. Despite this, urine tests are still more effective for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use, both drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to three months for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transmit.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the prime quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It’s advisable to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent sample of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair type (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the system of a lab. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry lacking from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is economical for dismissing drug usage in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Presumptive positive samples in Screening proceed to further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations than alternatives (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most arduous of methodologies.

Any positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As necessary, samples showing presumptive positives are washed before confirmation. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating is tough: The likelihood of cheating a hair test is minimal, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers usage trends: Provides insight into patterns of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: There is a 5-7 day delay before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair tests cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth may alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called a "hair follicle test", the actual assessment evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in Sea Isle City, NJ. The key benefits include superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
