Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Skillman, NJ. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise lies in the hair testing process, with testing centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests can be tailored for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other special requirements.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers and legal entities, as well as substance abuse specialists, now favor hair tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle tests align with zero-tolerance policies of employers and legal authorities. The key advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, minimally tampered with, ensuring a reliable screening method, though urine tests remain precise for the last 5 days of drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an effective technique for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month period for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A segment of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) proximate to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory comprises four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any extra data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Although it is economical for eliminating drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screening result mandates confirmation to be legally credible. Any samples exhibiting presumptive positive results in screening necessitate subsequent verification.

When a sample yields a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. In this stage, substances are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analyses the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Hair drug screenings can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine screenings that have a briefer detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug examination, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provision of historical insights: It reveals a pattern of substance usage over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
