In Smithburg, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle testing services. Whether it's for drug or alcohol testing purposes, we excel in hair analysis with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the scalp or other body parts for sample collection. Hair tests offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

The hair follicle drug test has become more prevalent in drug screening methods over the years. It is increasingly preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists who choose it over the traditional urine test. With its 90-day detection period, hair testing is favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies. Despite its limitations in identifying recent drug use within 5 days, unlike the urine test, its resilience to tampering ensures accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. Hair collected near the scalp can provide detection up to about a 3-month period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptively positive results in Screening require confirmatory analysis.

In instances of presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive results from the Screening process occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The overall laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests have the ability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer than urine tests.
  • Reduced susceptibility to cheating: The difficulty of tampering with a hair drug test results in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provision of historical use data: Hair tests can reveal a drug use timeline over an extended period, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become identifiable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Compared to other methods, hair drug tests tend to be more costly.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
