Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Somerdale, NJ. For hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed in most situations. Our tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored options for hair analysis.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method in recent times. Organizations such as employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts now often require hair tests over traditional urine tests. This testing method is preferred for its zero-tolerance advantage, ensuring diligence for employers, courts, and probation individuals. The main advantage is the extended period it can detect substance use, up to 90 days, through direct observation, rendering it nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent substance use within five days, urine tests are noted for their precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide insight into alcohol and drug use for about a 3-month period. The collection process is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the area nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The central steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a laboratory’s system. This consists of ensuring the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a swift preliminary check for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and primed for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that show presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicle situated beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
