Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in South Amboy, NJ. Whether you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our experts specialize in hair-based testing, with centers located across the nation, ready to conduct these assessments. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, acceptable from your scalp or body, to analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Increasingly, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screenings. Various employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists now request this test, overriding the traditional urine test. This setup is favored by workplaces enforcing strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation programs. Its major advantage lies in a prolonged detection window, often up to 90 days, carried out under supervised conditions, and is nearly infallible against tampering. Conversely, when detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a prolonged history of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to around 90 days for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is easy, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

An optimal sample for screening and verification is a 1.5-inch portion with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), cut closest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't present, a comparable amount of body hair can be retrieved. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating a sample into the laboratory's system. This step checks that the sample is properly sealed and transported, allocates a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Screening efficiently eliminates substances in most samples, though a positive indication requires confirmation for legal use. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial sample is used for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lower concentration than methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screen result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory protocol from Accessioning through to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can determine drug use for up to 3 months, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is extremely difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a trend of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot discern recent consumption: Drugs become evident in hair within roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier compared to alternate testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
