Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Springdale, New Jersey. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing makes us the go-to choice. We operate numerous testing centers across the nation capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various custom testing options.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug tests in conducting drug testing has been rising. Such tests are increasingly being mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are adopted by organizations with stringent drug-free policies, judiciary systems, and probationary monitoring. Their main advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, which can last up to 90 days, is collected through an observed process, and is almost tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has gained recognition as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biochemical markers within the strands of growing hair, it offers an extended timeline of substance use. Hair, when clipped near the scalp, can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. The process of gathering hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

Collecting a sample that is 1.5 inches in length and consists of roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for both preliminary screening and follow-up testing. To perform tests involving EtG, additional factors, and/or more than 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of hair. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In situations where scalp hair is absent, an equal quantity of body hair may be obtained. When we discuss head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

There are four fundamental phases in processing a drug test outcome in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where the sample is incorporated into the laboratory's system. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for detecting substance misuse. Even though Screening is a budget-friendly approach suitable for most specimens, results showing drug presence in court require confirmation. Any results suggesting drug presence in Screening demand follow-up verification.

For samples indicating drug presence during Screening, additional hair is separated from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a much lower level compared to other methods (such as urine or oral samples), highlighting why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Prior to confirmation, all samples indicating potential drug presence are washed accordingly. The comprehensive lab process, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, is verified against both the standards set by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) under the Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug evaluation:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify substance use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to deceit: Cheating on a hair drug assessment is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Reveals usage history: It offers insights into drug usage trends over time rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Substances take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessment typically costs more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Characteristics such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Springdale, NJ, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests with its superior accuracy and reliability. Offering a longer detection window, hair tests provide a deeper insight into drug use history, unmatched by the brief urine test timeframe. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
