Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests for drugs in Unionville, New Jersey. Whether it's a drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing spans all nationwide locations to facilitate tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific requirements.

Lately, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle tests. These tests, favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, replace the usual urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and parole officers utilize hair tests due to their prolonged detection window, often extending to 90 days. Being observed during collection makes these tests nearly tamper-proof, although urine tests are still preferred for very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to nearly three months for alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests beyond ten panels, a specimen weighting 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement of the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into the laboratory system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data required by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug usage. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive finding needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with a preliminary positive during Screening need a secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a preliminary positive are washed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in line with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter span.
  • Cheating is challenging: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
