At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide thorough hair follicle drug testing in Victory Gardens, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in this area with testing centers nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient for analysis. Hair testing allows for the examination of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in recent years as the method of choice for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This choice is linked to their zero-tolerance policies. Hair tests are favored for their extended detection timeline, which typically spans up to 90 days, is collected under observation, and is nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, urine tests remain the top choice for identifying recent drug use, within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is acknowledged as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair tends to archive an extended profile of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can yield up to a roughly three-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, reasonably hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp, will produce 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10-panel criteria, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other categories (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key steps in analyzing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial procedure of logging a sample into the lab's system. This process ensures the sample's seal and shipment were intact, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes possible additional data entry not captured by an electronic custody chain.

Screening is a preliminary and efficient scrutiny for identifying drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be courtroom acceptable. Any samples predicted positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are drawn from the hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis challenging to execute.

Any positive result from screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed prior to necessary confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect recent use.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers cumulative data: It can reveal a history of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs only become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
