Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Wanaque, NJ. Specializing in hair assessments, our centers across the country can perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required, where possible. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol, ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Recently, the integration of hair follicle drug tests has increased in prevalence. Many organizations, legal systems, and substance specialists are favoring hair tests over urine analyses. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary services rely on hair tests. A key benefit is the extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, ensuring minimal tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain precise for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a historical record of alcohol and drug usage over time. When hair is taken from close to the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen consisting of about 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Meanwhile, body hair includes other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. It involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not provided electronically by a chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to discard drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be legally admissible. Presumptive positive samples in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair in lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to carry out.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are utilized to confirm any positive screening result. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
