Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in West Belmar, New Jersey. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing solutions, with testing centers across the nation ready to perform these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, taken from the head or body. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence as a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine ones. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and parolees find hair tests particularly useful. The main advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensuring accuracy through observed collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If gathered near the scalp, hair offers around a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, moderately tough to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four central phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial introduction of a sample into a lab's system. It includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary inspection for drug misuse. While Screening provides an economical method to dismiss drug use across most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to stand in court. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Roughly 5-7 days are required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
