Accredited Drug Testing in Whippany, New Jersey offers comprehensive hair follicle drug checks. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is required, our expertise in hair assessment is available at numerous Nationwide centers for the execution of such tests. Sufficient hair length, typically 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or elsewhere on the body, is required. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made options.

Recently, there's been a notable shift towards hair follicle drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are increasingly opting for it over urine analysis. This is due to its longer drug detection window—approximately 90 days—obtained through a supervised process that resists tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended historical view of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and mailed, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result during Screening necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that appear positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

When a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive Screening results are verified through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples appearing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to mislead a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The test is often termed a "hair follicle test", but it examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
