In Wildwood, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether needing a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is skilled in hair assessments and operates testing sites across the country for these services. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Hair assessments can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified options.

Recently, hair follicle screening has increasingly become a prevalent method for drug evaluations. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug assessments over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle evaluations serve those in zero-tolerance environments, courts, and probationary individuals. Its main advantage lies in an extended drug use detection window of up to 90 days, relies on an observed collection method, and is challenging to tamper with. Yet, for determining recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair analysis has gained prominence as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers capture biomarkers, offering extended historical data on alcohol and drug exposure. When sampled near the scalp, hair samples can reveal a drug or alcohol history spanning approximately three months. The collection process is straightforward; it's somewhat resistant to tampering, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing roughly 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) is optimal, providing 100mg of hair necessary for both preliminary and confirmatory tests. Tests involving EtG, additional parameters, or more than 10-panel tests require 150mg of hair. It's advised to use a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. If hair from the scalp is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is a viable alternative. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process to determine drug test outcomes involves four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples undergo initial processing within a lab's system. This stage ensures the sample is appropriately sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody.

The Screening phase identifies possible drug abuse quickly. Though cost-effective for large sample volumes, a positive screening necessitates further confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples returning a positive result during Screening require verification through a secondary procedure.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other techniques like urine or oral fluid testing, underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS, all positive results from the Screening stage undergo Confirmation. If necessary, samples are washed before confirmation. The lab process is rigorously reviewed from Accessioning to Confirmation under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards alongside ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can track drug usage for up to 90 days, offering a longer detection period compared to urine tests.
  • Highly resistant to tampering: Hair tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring reliable results.
  • Capability to reflect historical patterns: Allows for insight into ongoing substance use, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become traceable in hair within 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair tests generally cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth rate may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," these tests focus on analyzing the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
