Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Woods Tavern, New Jersey. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, this facility specializes in hair testing and features nationwide testing centers capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used for these tests, which can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now advocate for hair testing over traditional urine testing. Hair tests are utilized by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary monitoring due to their extended drug use detection period of up to 90 days and the difficulty involved in tampering with them. Yet, urine tests still hold more accuracy for usage detected within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method utilizes hair to record long-term alcohol and drug activity by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within a lab's system. This stage ensures the sample was securely sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry tasks not handled by electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening performs an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. As a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples showing preliminary positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening results is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirming results as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are notoriously hard to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: These tests can provide a timeline of drug use, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth can influence the concentration of drug traces in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
