At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Woodstock, New Jersey. Whether you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair analysis stands out. With nationwide access, our centers can accommodate your testing needs. Typically, you'll require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body for testing. Our hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more custom options.

Of late, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method in drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are choosing hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs rely on this method. Hair tests are favored for their lengthy detection span—up to 90 days—and the near impossibility of manipulation. However, urine tests are still preferred for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by storing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For testing EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable volume of body hair might be obtained. Here, head hair strictly means scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. Tasks involved are checking the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a quick initial assessment for potential drug abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated to be court-admissible. Any samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result employs methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if required. A comprehensive review of the entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the authority of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection period.
  • Cheat resistance: Hair drug testing is notoriously difficult to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It enables the mapping of drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just spotting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It usually takes between 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug screening techniques.
  • Result deviations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Woodstock, NJ, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine testing with superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests capture recent drug use, hair tests offer a more extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. With their precision, hair tests uncover substance use effectively, giving employers a more comprehensive substance use profile of individuals.

Unlike urine tests, which can be susceptible to tampering or producing short-term results, hair follicle tests are renowned for their robustness. Their observed collection process adds an additional layer of reliability, ensuring results are both accurate and resistant to manipulation.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Woodstock, NJ, benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing, which spans up to 90 days. This allows for a thorough overview of an applicant or employee's substance history and supports informed hiring decisions. The broad detection timeframe empowers businesses to understand long-term substance patterns rather than just recent usage.

Such an extensive detection period stands out against more transient methods, making hair testing an indispensable tool for organizations prioritizing a comprehensive assessment of drug history. Understanding past behaviors helps companies cultivate safer and drug-free workplaces reliably.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing in Woodstock, NJ, drastically reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration. This makes it a trusted choice for employers seeking reliable results. Unlike other methods susceptible to tampering, hair testing's observed collection process ensures specimen integrity throughout.

This reliable approach guarantees that the results are unquestionable, leading to credible substance use assessments. Without the risk of manipulation, businesses can confidently adhere to drug-free policies, maintaining security and trust across their operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
