Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alameda, New Mexico. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, available at our centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair testing options include analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

In recent years, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests has increasingly supplanted traditional methods. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals favor hair-based testing over standard urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation conditions. Their advantage is extended detection of drug use—up to a 90-day window—observed during collection and resistant to tampering. Still, urine tests remain preferred for identifying recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for assessing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within its growing fibers. When sourced from the scalp's vicinity, hair offers a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for mailing.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg, which is an ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test result encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample’s initial incorporation into a lab's framework. This process verifies the sample's secure sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data handling absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary evaluation for drug substances. Although screening cost-effectively excludes drug presence in most samples, a positive result mandates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples preliminarily positive in screening need subsequent confirmation.

Upon a preliminary positive in Screening, additional hair from the original sample is processed for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), showcasing the complexity of hair drug screening.

For positive screening results, Confirmation is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use over 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to fake: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Chronological data provision: This method illustrates a timeline of drug consumption rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drug detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle itself under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Alameda, NM, the advantages of hair vs. urine testing are noteworthy. Hair tests are favored for their superior detection capabilities, covering a broader range of substances with greater accuracy over prolonged periods. This allows employers and legal entities to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data.

Urine tests are limited by their short detection window, while hair analysis offers a panoramic view of substance usage, reducing the chances of skewed results from isolated incidences.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window provided by hair follicle testing in Alameda, NM, offers a significant edge, monitoring drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This long-term view gives a fuller picture of an individual's substance habits.

Employers can leverage this insight to evaluate the ongoing reliability of their workforce, ensuring sound hiring decisions based on extensive background checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
