Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug screening services in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair assessments with centers across all cities Nationwide. Generally, either 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Over recent years, hair follicle tests have increasingly become a standard drug testing method. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over standard urine ones. Hair follicle tests serve zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and those on probation. Its main advantage is a 90-day detection window, conducted through an observed process, ensuring minimal chance for tampering. Conversely, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equal portion of body hair can be collected. The term head hair pertains to scalp hair alone, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The principal stages in laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system, including verifying the proper sealing and transport of the sample, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening represents an initial rapid test for substance/abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective strategy to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive outcome needs confirmation for it to be legally recognized. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening need secondary verification.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than innate to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which highlights why hair drug screening presents the greatest challenge.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Expanded detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test proves highly difficult, yielding more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It can portray a pattern of substance use across a timeframe, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-ingestion.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug screening approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: While typically termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Santa Fe, NM, the former offers consistently superior accuracy and reliability. Hair testing surpasses traditional urine methods due to its extensive detection timeframe and resistance to manipulation, providing employers and other entities with more conclusive data regarding substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
