At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Anthony, New Mexico. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing extends nationwide with centers equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for analysis. Our hair tests effectively detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular, favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. This method suits zero-tolerance policies, legal environments, and probation situations. A key advantage is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is challenging to tamper with. However, for detecting recent use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying substance use. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by trapping biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for preliminary screening and further verification. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair may be obtained. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary expedited assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration level than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Verification is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to bypass a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical data: It can display a drug usage pattern over an extended time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Anthony, NM, hair follicle testing stands out over urine tests for its superior detection accuracy. The process ensures a reliable assessment of drug use history, with a detection window far surpassing traditional methods. Employers prefer this for its detailed, long-term insights.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
