Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Armijo, New Mexico. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we have centers nationwide for your convenience. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug tests are increasingly favored over urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Favored for zero-tolerance policies, these tests have a detection window of approximately 90 days. Despite this, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When harvested close to the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easily collected, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil), near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main four stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be affirmed for court validity. Samples that show presumptive positive results during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screen result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Reduced chance of manipulation: It is extremely hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: This can display drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Armijo, NM, hair follicle testing provides clear benefits over traditional urine tests. Hair testing detects drug use over a much more extended period, typically up to 90 days, which surpasses the shorter detection window of urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
