Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bingham, New Mexico. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our experts specialize in this area with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from your head or body for most cases. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other bespoke options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers and probation individuals find them invaluable. Hair tests reveal drug use over 90 days, are observed in collection to prevent fraud, yet for use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair drug screening is highly regarded for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarker traces within the fibers of the strand. When collected close to the scalp, it can offer up to a three-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into the lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial check for drugs. Though Screening is a cost-effective means to dismiss drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to perform.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is very challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair tests are typically more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variance: Hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
