Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Capulin, New Mexico. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with centers spread across various Nationwide locations. Typically, testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body if needed. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other unique testing specifications.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. These are favored by many companies, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under legal supervision. A prominent advantage is a broader detection period of up to 90 days with direct supervision during collection, ensuring minimal risk of manipulation. However, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the benchmark of accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When hair is collected near the scalp, it allows for a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean specifically the scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The major steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into the lab's system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. In this phase, drugs are taken from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, which increases result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can show a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," this test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
