Providing a comprehensive range of hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing caters to Cedar Crest, New Mexico. Whether you require hair-based drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair analysis. We boast testing facilities across all major U.S. cities where tests can be conducted. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is typically required. Our hair assessments detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and include various specialized testing packages.

Increased utilization of hair follicle drug testing has been observed in recent times. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and addiction treatment experts now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers upholding zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation cases often employ these tests. Their key advantage is a significantly extended detection window, recognizing drug usage for up to 90 days and ensuring secure collection. However, for detection of recent drug use, spanning the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record for alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to #2 pencil diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not present, equivalent body hair may be acquired. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair captures any other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in transforming a drug test sample in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the sample’s introduction into the lab's system. This step verifies the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and documents any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial brief check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screen needs further confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples testing positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original collection and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging process.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All positively screened samples are cleansed before confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over 90 days, contrary to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficulty in deception: Hair drug testing is notably tough to falsify, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use, rather than merely identifying recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent consumption: A period of 5-7 days is needed for drugs to be detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Inconsistent results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variability can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the testing procedure focuses on the hair strand itself, not the scalp’s hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine tests in Cedar Crest, NM? Primarily, it provides enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing can capture a broader period of substance use, offering a detailed timeline of consumption. Compared to urine tests, hair follicles offer a more profound insight into an individual's history.

While urine tests are popular, hair analysis has a superior detection period of up to 90 days, making it the preferred choice for long-term substance evaluation. This extended window ensures higher awareness and understanding of an individual's habits for employers and legal bodies.

Extended Detection Window

The prolonged detection window of hair follicle testing in Cedar Crest, NM, is unmatched. By examining hair samples, this method can identify drug use over a period extending up to 90 days, providing employers with a comprehensive insight into substance use patterns.

For employers, this extended detection capability means gaining a full understanding of an employee's or applicant's drug use history, enabling informed decision-making. It fills the gaps left by shorter detection methods, thus enhancing workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
